NFL 2012: a banner year for rookie quarterbacks

Encouraged by the success of Carolina’s Cam Newton and Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton last season, five teams hand the offensive controls to five players fresh out of the college ranks.

5. Brock Osweiler, Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler (6) passes against the San Francisco 49ers during the second half of an NFL preseason football game in Denver, Aug. 26.

Drafted: #57 overall (in second round)

Pro status: 3rd string

College: Arizona State

6 ft. 7 in., 242 lbs.

Hometown: Kalispell, Mont.

QB rating in preseason: 57.5

Playing behind Peyton Manning and Caleb Hanie (a fifth-year pro), Osweiler is not likely to see any playing time, but just mentoring under Manning should be an exceptional education. And that’s probably a perfect fit since he bypassed his senior season at Arizona State to turn pro and started only 15 games for the Sun Devils. Tall for a quarterback at 6 ft. 7 in., he originally planned to attend Gonzaga University on a basketball scholarship, but settled on an ASU football career instead. His height surely helps him spot receivers. Last year, he became just the fourth player in Pac-12 Conference history to throw for 4,000 yards.
