The 1989-90 was one of highs and lows for Loyola Marymount. They averaged what is still an NCAA record for points per game (122.4) over the course of a season, but they also lost a teammate - one of their best players - when Hank Gathers collapsed and died during a West Coast Conference tournament game less than a week before the NCAA tournament.
Loyola Marymount entered the tournament as the No. 11 seed out of the West Region. They rolled past defending champion Michigan, 149-115, in the highest-scoring game in NCAA history before being knocked out in the Elite Eight by eventual champions UNLV.
Editor's note: The original version of this list item misstated the time frame of Hank Gathers' passing.
