Jason Garrett and Paul Pasqualoni take over after Wade Phillips fired from Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, announced Monday that head coach Wade Phillips would be replaced by Jason Garrett effective immediately.

Wade Phillips was fired after a 1-7 start for the Cowboys this season. Phillips led the Cowboys to a 12-6 record in 2009, and was in his fourth year with the Cowboys. The head coach's regular season record was 34-22. Some were talking about the Cowboys making a run for the Super Bowl at the start of the season, but after allowing 1,299 yards and 121 points over the last three games they have become one of the league's worst-performing teams.

When star quarterback Tony Romo got injured in a losing game against the New York Giants on Oct. 25, the chances of a comeback became grim.

Jones had been saying he would not make a mid-season coaching change, but on Sunday, Phillips led the Cowboys to another loss. After Sunday's 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers Jones made the decision to make the change.

David Buehler was reported by McClatchy-Tribune to have said, "I'm just kind of in shock right now. It's tough. A guy you respect so much and rally around is gone."

Jones named Cowboys offensive coordinator, Jason Garrett, as the interim head coach while defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni replaced Phillips as interim defensive coordinator.

Though currently in an interim position, if Garette satisfies management he will be eligible to continue as head coach next season.

In a statement released by the Dallas Cowboys, Phillips said he was "very proud of what our team and our players accomplished in the previous three years."

Garrett's first game as head coach will be against the Giants, Sunday.
