Born in 1872, amid the settling of the Civil War's dust and a push by city fathers to contain unruly and impromptu Mardi Gras celebrations, Rex remains the “King of Carnival.” Rex introduced the green, purple and gold colors that have become the hues of the season in New Orleans.
Led by grand marshal “Bathurst,” a masked rider, the Rex procession features floats, top national high school marching bands, and a throned monarch. One of the biggest daytime parades, Rex rolls at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, following its traditional Uptown route.
