Mardi Gras: a guide to five of the biggest New Orleans parades

Parades known as krewes form the backbones of the Mardi Gras season in New Orleans. Here are five of the biggest ones.

5. Krewe of Thoth

Perhaps the sleeper super krewe, Krewe of Thoth was founded in 1947 as a charitable organization. It’s one of the few major krewes that go down Magazine Street, a narrow channel that pumps up the revelry. In Thoth's case, that includes throwing stuffed polar bears to onlookers. The route passes, per tradition, several institutions for the elderly and disabled children, so they can share in the celebration.

Krewe of Thoth gets rolling at noon on Sunday.
