The ‘billionaire primary’: Who’s backing whom?

Mega-wealthy donors, many of them billionaires, are expected to play an unprecedented role in the 2016 presidential race. Here’s a list of who’s backing whom so far:

6. Larry Ellison: Marco Rubio (R)

Mega-billionaire Larry Ellison, founder of the computer technology company Oracle, is hosting a fundraiser at his California mansion for Senator Rubio on June 9. Tickets to the reception cost $2,700 per person, according to Politico. There will also be a dinner for couples who have raised $27,000.

Mr. Ellison has been an active Republican fundraiser and donor in recent years. In 2012, he donated $3 million to Mitt Romney’s super-PAC Restore Our Future. Last year, he hosted a fundraiser for the National Republican Senatorial Committee featuring Sen. Rand Paul (R) of Kentucky, who is also now running for president.

Ellison ranks No. 5 on the Forbes world ranking of billionaires for 2015. He is worth $54.3 billion.
