Where do things stand at Guantánamo? Six basic questions answered.

President Obama this week pledged to “reengage” with Congress to find a way to close the terror detention camp at the Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, naval base. The renewed focus comes as 100 of the 166 detainees are reported to be engaged in a hunger strike. Here is a brief look at where things stand now.

6. How many Guantánamo detainees have been sent home or released to a third country?

A. 613.

Since January 2002 when the detention facility opened, 779 individuals have been held captive there. Nine detainees have died at Guantánamo, the most recent was in September when Adnan Latif, a Yemeni cleared for release, apparently took his own life.

An estimated 532 detainees were released during the Bush administration.

The Obama administration has released 72 detainees.
