If Republicans really wanted to focus the evening on jobs and the economy, Romney could reach into a deep well of corporate supporters for a speaker who could talk about life in the boardroom during the Obama economy.
Romney frequently name-checks the founder of sandwich chain Jimmy John's, Jimmy John Liautaud, on the campaign trail. Would Staples CEO Ron Sargent take up the call for the man who helped start the business he now runs? Would former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina or former eBay chief Meg Whitman step into the ring?
The risk – and reason this would be an unlikely choice – is that Romney's already got the CEO image down pat. Would he really want America to see another rich, (probably) white, (probably) male face on the podium?
