1972: Sen. Edmund Muskie (D) of Maine reportedly tears up outside the Union Leader building in Manchester, reacting to an editorial critical of his wife. He says it was snow melting on his face. He beats his key rival, Sen. George McGovern (D) of South Dakota, by a less-than-expected margin. Senator McGovern ultimately wins the Democratic nomination but loses to incumbent Richard Nixon.
