Although he acknowledged that “ there may be different ways to craft a sensible bill,” the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) CEO Cary Sherman defended SOPA in a response to a CNET.com editorial. Sherman said that it will protect consumers from rogue sites that deceive them by taking advantage of lax copyrights laws in countries such as China and Ukraine.
“It should be unacceptable to any of us involved in legitimate commerce online that a rogue Web site based outside of the United States -- but hawking U.S. products or copyrighted works -- can currently escape U.S. laws,” Sherman wrote.
