JFK assassination to moonwalk: 6 American conspiracy theories

American conspiracy theories date back to the days before the Declaration of Independence. Here are six – both old and new, well-known and obscure – that are percolating in the American zeitgeist now.

6. The Bilderberg Group

Is the secret new world order actually not so secret?

Even though it publishes a list of attendees, the Bilderberg Group – a long-running conference of politicians and financiers committed to cross-Atlantic friendships – continues to raise suspicions about what global leaders are plotting, including a one-world government answerable only to intellectual elites.

As with most conspiracy theories, there's a kernel of truth. In 2001, founding member Denis Healey suggested that "[t]o say we were striving for a one-world government is exaggerated, but not wholly unfair.... [W]e felt that a single community throughout the world would be a good thing."

The press is not invited to meetings so that members can hold discussions without worrying that their private comments will be reported, the group says.
