Over the hedge

A grocery shopping trip ended with a surprising spectacle.

As I was standing in a parking lot getting ready to load the weekly groceries into the family car, I heard an incredible sound. It was otherworldly and I could not fathom what it was – until I looked up!

Above me, I saw a hundred sandhill cranes flying in formation, weaving themselves together with sounds that were sweet and high and undulating.

As they disappeared out of sight, I looked around me and saw mothers, fathers, children, and store attendants all with a look of wonder on their faces. We all smiled to one another. No words were necessary!

Why is Christian Science in our name?

Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.

The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Here, you’ll find award-winning journalism not driven by commercial influences – a news organization that takes seriously its mission to uplift the world by seeking solutions and finding reasons for credible hope.
