Singer Dolly Parton appeared on “The Voice” prior to her newest NBC TV movie, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas Of Many Colors,” premiering on the network after the success of the 2015 TV movie based on her childhood.
Ms. Parton performed her song “Jolene” on the newest “Voice” episode along with “Voice” coach Miley Cyrus and the members of the a cappella group Pentatonix.
The TV movie “Dolly Parton’s Christmas Of Many Colors: Circle of Love” premieres on NBC on Nov. 30 and is a follow-up to the 2015 program “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors,” which premiered around the same time in 2015.
“Coat,” which was based on Parton’s childhood, became a ratings hit, ranking as the most-viewed original movie on a broadcast network in over four years.
What brought so many viewers to “Coat” and will “Christmas Of Many Colors: Circle of Love” match that when it airs tonight?
USA Today writer Robert Bianco believes that for some, the appeal of the first movie was Parton’s name being attached to it and the religious themes, and he thinks that will apply to the second movie as well.
“Like the first movie, it’s sure to be popular,” Mr. Bianco wrote of the new movie. “Parton’s well-earned fan base, and the film’s explicitly religious message – a rarity among holiday movies, which tend to be more secular or fantasy-driven – will see to that.”
However, Tony Maglio of TheWrap believes that the first movie succeeded in part last year because it didn’t have a lot of competition on broadcast television.
“TV follow-ups rarely do as well as the originals,” Mr. Maglio wrote. “‘Circle of Love’ is battling history. But worse than that, it’s battling ‘Empire.’ Last year, ‘Coat’ faced off against modest competition, including the ‘Bones’ season finale on Fox, some CBS sitcoms, and ‘Toy Story’ on ABC … The ‘Coat’ sequel does have one advantage: Its lead-in is the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.”
