Kendrick Lamar performs on the second day of the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Oct. 1, 2016, in Austin, Texas. Lamar is one of the headliners for the 2017 Coachella music festival.

The performers for the 2017 Coachella music festival will include a big hip-hop presence, plus at least one big surprise: movie composer Hans Zimmer.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which is held in April, will include headliners Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Radiohead.

Joining them will be the band The xx, artist Travis Scott, the band Bon Iver, and singer Lorde, among many others, as well as Mr. Zimmer, composer for films including Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” film trilogy, the Nolan film “Inception,” and this year’s “Hidden Figures.”

The festival will consist of six days of music spread over two weekends, beginning on April 14. Radiohead will take the stage on April 14 and 21, and Beyoncé performs on both April 15 and 22.

Coachella promoter Goldenvoice also created the festival Desert Trip last year, which featured a bill of rock legends such as Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and the Who.

Observers have noted a turn toward more hip-hop for the 2017 iteration of Coachella, which in the past has been the highest-grossing music festival by far

“In addition to the usual emphasis on major dance music acts … and indie rock … the 2017 lineup is heavy on hip-hop,” wrote Maane Khatchatourian for Variety

Hip-hop artists on the bill include not only Mr. Lamar and Mr. Scott but Future, Gucci Mane, DJ Khaled, and ScHoolboy Q.

Los Angeles Times writer Mikael Wood celebrated the decisions of the festival organizers.

“Lamar, the celebrated rapper from Compton, was another inspired choice,” Mr. Wood writes.
