Nelson recorded "Blue" after the song was originally performed by singer Roy Acuff in 1945 and singers Hank Williams and Gene Vincent, respectively. Nelson's version came in 1975.
Rolling Stone selected it as number 309 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, writing, "Delivered with Nelson’s jazz-singer phrasing, it’s the beating heart of Red Headed Stranger, his 1975 concept album about love and death in the Old West."
