21. 'The Thing'

This 1982 remake directed by John Carpenter centers on an isolated research station in Antarctica. Researchers and their helicopter pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell) discover that a Norwegian helicopter has crashed nearby after mysteriously pursuing a dog through the tundra. When the researchers bring the dog back to their station, they discover they are now living with a strange monster.

The tension rises for the researchers as they begin to suspect each other of harboring an alien illness, culminating in a storm of grenades and flamethrowers. The film's groundbreaking special effects and makeup, if a bit gratuitous, provide real chills.
