George Stevens' 1959 film is based on the true story of Anne Frank (portrayed by Millie Perkins in the film), a Jewish teenager who stayed with her family and friends in hidden rooms in her father's office building during World War II until they were discovered and sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
Both Perkins and actress Diane Baker, who portrayed Anne's sister Margot, made their film debuts in the movie.
Baker told CNN that Anne's father Otto was present while she was being tested for the role and told her, "You remind me so much of my daughter Margot."
