Mark Sandrich's 1942 film stars Bing Crosby as Jim Hardy, a former professional singer who opens an inn in Connecticut that's only open on holidays and who falls in love with a woman, Linda, who comes to work there as a performer. But soon Jim's former partner Ted (Fred Astaire) arrives at the inn, falls in love with Linda (Marjorie Reynolds), and wants to team up with her as dance partners in Hollywood.
The film is the origin of the song "White Christmas," which would become a popular hit for Crosby and is still the bestselling single of all time.
The name for the hotel chain Holiday Inn, which opened its first establishment in 1952, was inspired by the film.
