The 1958 film directed by Terence Fisher is a loose adaptation of Stoker's novel but featured prolific actor Christopher Lee as the Count and Peter Cushing as Dr. Van Helsing. In "Horror," Jonathan Harker, usually a hapless solicitor, pretends to be a librarian working for Dracula but in fact plans to kill the vampire, and Dracula preys on Jonathan's fiance, named Lucy in this version, with Mina as a minor character who is Lucy's sister-in-law. The movie was a box office success and well received critically. "It's a film that deserves recognition as one of this country's finest horror movies, a sexually charged Gothic nightmare featuring standout performances from Hammer stalwarts Lee and Peter Cushing," BBC critic Jamie Russell wrote in 2007.
