The 2009 movie portrayed the famous detective in the deerstalker cap (Robert Downey Jr.) and his doctor sidekick Watson (Jude Law) as skilled fighters who often were forced to physically battle criminals. While Holmes is said to study martial arts in writer Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories, the physical fighting is given less of an emphasis in Doyle's stories than in the 2009 film.
