The 2002 film was adapted from the popular cartoon show which began in 1969 and followed a group of teenagers – and a dog – who solved mysteries. Each episode involved various supernatural phenomena, including ghosts and monsters, which were often only a person in costume. The movie starred Matthew Lillard as Scooby's owner Shaggy, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred. Most critics disliked the film, but the movie was a box-office success, and a sequel was released in 2004. Originally, the movie was going to be a satire of the original series, but it was later decided to make the film more family-friendly.
