5 TV adaptations, the good and the bad

Another classic television show is getting the cinema treatment with the new adaptation of 'The Lone Ranger,' starring Armie Hammer as the titular character and Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto, which is due in 2013. Bringing TV characters to the multiplex has been a popular strategy for decades, and while some movies have been lauded as a great extension of the original show, others haven't fared as well. Here are some of the most recent movie adaptations of beloved television shows, the ones audiences loved and the ones everyone would rather forget.

1. 'Scooby-Doo'

The 2002 film was adapted from the popular cartoon show which began in 1969 and followed a group of teenagers – and a dog – who solved mysteries. Each episode involved various supernatural phenomena, including ghosts and monsters, which were often only a person in costume. The movie starred Matthew Lillard as Scooby's owner Shaggy, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred. Most critics disliked the film, but the movie was a box-office success, and a sequel was released in 2004. Originally, the movie was going to be a satire of the original series, but it was later decided to make the film more family-friendly.
