The 2006 film is based on a book by Lauren Weisberger which was supposedly inspired by her real-life stint as an editor's assistant. It starred Anne Hathaway as a New York resident working as assistant to a poisonous, demanding editor named Miranda Priestly, played by Streep. Streep earned a Best Actress nomination for the role. Director David Frankel said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that Miranda not wearing any makeup during a particularly vulnerable scene was Streep's idea.
