Streep played Karen Silkwood in the 1983 film and was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of the real-life worker at a nuclear fuel production plant who died in a car accident some called suspicious after she had fought to expose the plant's safety violations. The film also earned praise for Cher's performance as Karen's friend Dolly, and Cher was nominated as Best Supporting Actress that year for the role.
