Many schools ban heavy chains and spiked jewelry for fear that the accessories could be used as weapons.

Jewelry featuring spikes and chains has been popular with certain counter-culture crowds since the 1970s.

Many school administrators – about half of those surveyed – see heavy metal accessories as potential weapons.

While many schools ban them entirely, some schools offer specific guidelines. South Eugene High School in Oregon permits spikes that are less than 1/4 inch long.
