Another actor has been cast in the upcoming movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
“Fantastic” is based on the book of the same name by “Harry Potter” writer J.K. Rowling and the movie (which is being written by Rowling herself) centers on Newt Scamander, an expert on magical creatures. News had previously broken that actor Eddie Redmayne of “The Theory of Everything” will play Newt.
And now, according to Variety, the film has another actor on board. Actress Katherine Waterston, who starred in the 2014 film “Inherent Vice,” will portray a character named Porpentina, or Tina for short. According to Variety, this witch is American and meets Newt in New York.
Other main characters in the film will include, according to Variety, Tina’s younger sister Queenie and a man named Jacob who is a “rival” of Newt’s.
“Potter” fans know that in Harry’s world, Scamander’s book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is a textbook often assigned to Hogwarts students. Rowling later published a book version of “Fantastic” in 2001 and funds from the book’s sales went to Comic Relief, a charity.
“Potter” fans have been intrigued about the setting of “Fantastic” since the city of New York was first brought up. The “Potter” series takes place in Britain and during the series, Harry and his friends meet students from other international magical schools like Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. But recently on Twitter, Rowling herself dropped some hints about a magic school in America after a fan asked her about it.
If Tina is an American witch as Variety reports, then perhaps the character has some ties with this American school.
According to Reuters, David Yates will be directing “Fantastic.” Yates helmed the last several films in the “Potter” series, including the two-part finale, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”
