According to “X-Men: Apocalypse” director Bryan Singer, actor Kodi Smit-McPhee is joining the cast.
Singer posted on Instagram that Smit-McPhee will portray the “X-Men” character Nightcrawler, a role that was previously taken on by “Cabaret” actor Alan Cumming.
Smit-McPhee has previously appeared in such films as the 2014 movie “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” the 2013 film “Romeo & Juliet,” and the 2012 animated movie “ParaNorman.”
It was previously announced that “Game of Thrones” actress Sophie Turner will be playing a young Jean Grey in “Apocalypse,” while “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” actress Alexandra Shipp will be portraying the character of Storm and “The Tree of Life” actor Tye Sheridan will play Cyclops.
The last “X-Men” film, “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” was released this summer and became the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2014, according to the website Box Office Mojo. Monitor film critic Peter Rainer gave "Future" a B+ grade, writing of the film, “What elevates this film above most of its predecessors is the dynamic action filmmaking and, above all, its wit… I couldn’t follow many of the ins and outs of the time-travel scenario, and I’m not altogether sure that the filmmakers could, either. It doesn’t really matter. It’s enough that the movie is fun.”
The current iteration of the “X-Men” franchise started with the 2011 film “X-Men: First Class,” which starred James McAvoy as Professor Xavier (a role originally taken on by actor Patrick Stewart), Michael Fassbender as Magneto (the part first played by actor Ian McKellan), and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique (first played by Rebecca Romijn) and took place in the 1960s. “Future” took place in both the present and the 1970s and so starred McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence, Stewart, and McKellan.
“Apocalypse” is set to be released in 2016 and according to the website io9, “A Most Violent Year” actor Oscar Isaac is set to star as the villain Apocalypse.
