“Girls” actress Allison Williams has been cast in the title role of the upcoming live production of “Peter Pan” that will air on NBC.
It was also recently announced that actor Christopher Walken, who starred in the 2007 movie musical “Hairspray,” among other singing and dancing work, will portray Captain Hook in the production.
“I have wanted to play Peter Pan since I was about three years old, so this is a dream come true,” Williams said of her casting in a statement. “It’s such an honor to be a part of this adventure, and I’m very excited to get to work with this extraordinarily talented team. And besides, what could go wrong in a live televised production with simultaneous flying, sword fighting and singing?”
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who executive-produced NBC’s 2013 live musical “The Sound of Music,” are also executive-producing “Pan.”
“Allison Williams is a major find," Zadan and Meron said of the casting in a statement. "She will reinvent the iconic role of Peter Pan with her wit, her warmth, her dynamic flying and her wonderful musical abilities. The score will be sung beautifully and introduced to a whole new generation of families.”
NBC has aired live shows of “Pan” before, including in 1955 with star Mary Martin as Peter Pan and actor Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook.
“Pan,” which will air on Dec. 4, follows the “Music” production, which attracted huge ratings. “Music” starred country singer Carrie Underwood as Maria, “True Blood” actor Stephen Moyer as Captain von Trapp, and Broadway stars Christian Borle, Laura Benanti, and Audra McDonald.
NBC announced earlier this year that it has acquired the rights to “The Music Man” and plans to air that show in 2015, according to Deadline.
Meanwhile, Fox is planning to air a live show of the musical “Grease” sometime in 2015, according to Entertainment Weekly.
