President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to a soldier who saved the lives of several comrades in a 2007 ambush in Afghanistan that killed two others, including a sergeant from Wisconsin.
The White House says Army Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta (JOON'-tuh) went beyond the call of duty during an October 2007 attack in Korengal Valley. Giunta engaged the enemy in gunfire to prevent the ambushers from carrying away Sgt. Joshua Brennan of McFarland, who had been wounded. Brennan died hours later, but his family praised Giunta for trying to save him.
Giunta is the first living service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq or Afghanistan.
