Matthew Vaughn to direct 'X-Men: First Class,' movie to be released in 2011

It’s official: Matthew Vaughn will direct 'X-Men: First Class,' a prequel to the X-Men trilogy set to hit the big screen next year.
Initially it seemed Bryan Singer, director of X-Men and X2, would again take the reins. But when other directing commitments took him out of the running, 20th Century Fox began looking to Vaughn, who was also rumored to be in the running earlier in the process. The studio has now confirmed Vaughn will indeed be their guy.
'X-Men: First Class,' which is slated to hit theaters June 3, 2011, will reportedly focus on the early years of its storyline, explaining the origin of the feud between Professor X and Magneto. From Fox:
“Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men."
So is Vaughn the right man for the job?
He’s got comic cred with April’s Kick-Ass, a film Vaughn co-wrote and directed about a teen and comic fan who decides, despite lacking any super powers, to become a super hero. Vaughn’s other directing credits include Layer Cake (2004) and Stardust (2007).
