Gallup: 28% of Americans making "major changes" to live green

Gallup's annual eco-poll has found that 28 percent of Americans have made "major changes" to their lifestyles to help protect the planet.

In a survey of 1,012 US adults, the polling group found that the most common change is recycling more (39%), followed by conserving gasoline (17%), purchasing biodegradable items (14%), and conserving electricity (11%).

Those making these major changes are more likely to be women than men (34% versus 21%) and are more likely to be Democrats than Republicans (32% versus 20%).

The percentage of Americans making major changes to their habits for the environment is down from 31 percent in 2000, but up from 23 percent in 2003.
