I live in Rapid City, South Dakota, where we have "closed primaries." For a long time I've been thinking that a solution for so much partisanship is to have an "open primaries system" not only in South Dakota but also all over the nation. This would break the gridlock of a divided government.
When I read Sen. Snowe’s commentary “Americans must mobilize for moderation,” I was so glad that someone agrees with me. She writes: “Urging more ‘open primaries’ in which voters need not declare a party affiliation will produce candidates for the general election who are less extreme.” I am registered as Independent.
