Seven tips for making your first year of college a success

The first semester of college is just one new thing after another. It’s challenging, exciting, and sometimes a little scary. As a professor who’s taught hundreds of firstyear students, I'd like to offer seven tips to get your first year of college off to a good start.

5. Remember who you are

Be proud of who you are. You’re going to meet an amazing diversity of people. Remember, you’re loved by your family, you've worked hard, and you have great promise.

Find organizations you’re interested in and get involved. Try to make one be about public service. These will be the important ways for you to connect social and academic interests.

Be friendly with everybody, but take your time to choose good friends. There will be mean girls and not-nice boys. Figure out how to identify them and walk away.

Call the people who raised you. And not just because you want something.

Call someone (perhaps the most understanding of the people who raised you) before you decide to get a tattoo or pierce any part of your body visible in a job interview.
