After Costa Concordia disaster: 8 safety tips for cruise ship passengers

The recent cruise ship disaster in Italy has prompted travel industry experts to advise the public about safety steps they can take, not only aboard ships but also in hotels. When the Costa Concordia ran aground off the shore of Tuscany on Jan. 13, roughly 160 yards from the shore of Giglio Island, many of the more than 4,200 passengers and crew on board the ship were reportedly unprepared for the crisis and the evacuation that followed.

Nancy Dunnan, publisher of TravelSmart Newsletter, urges cruise ship passengers to take precautions to protect themselves and their belongings. She suggests the following:

4. Don’t flash your cash

Flashing your cash sends a clear signal to any unsavory types lurking about. Keep limited amounts of cash on your person – always carefully concealed in a wallet or purse. And put your cash in two different places so if one stash is stolen you’ll have backup. Possible choices: your in-cabin safe (if you’re on a ship that provides them – check ahead of time), your waterproof zipped bag (mentioned above), a locked briefcase or suitcase, or inside your laptop, provided you can lock the case.

Use credit cards and charge services and items to your cabin when possible. And always travel with two credit/debit cards so you have a backup if one is lost, stolen, or its credit line is frozen.
