Jeep recall includes select Grand Cherokees for fire risk
If you’ve already brought your 2011 or 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee or Dodge Durango in for a repair of the headliner or vanity mirror, you might need to have it done once again.
The recall is a subset of the one that was announced back in July 2014—that one covering a wider range of vehicles, including the 2013 and 2014 model years—in which the wiring within the sun visor might short-circuit and potentially cause a fire if the headliner or vanity mirror have been serviced.
Even though the issue only previous pertained to models that had previous headliner or vanity-visor service, the previous precautionary fix introduced a spacer with wire guide.
In this revised recall for 2011 and 2012 models, in a recall campaign not yet posted to the federal Recalls.gov portal, a new adhesive is used for the repair to help secure headliners and help keep the wiring from being in contact with surrounding surfaces that are potentially abrasive.
FCA US is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue, which pertains only to vehicles produced prior to September 2, 2012.
The issue itself is rare, affecting an extremely small subset of vehicles that have already been serviced under the previous campaign.
This new recall affects 352,831 vehicles in the U.S., as well as 26,487 in Canada, 13,037 in Mexico, and 84,330 elsewhere in the world.
FCA spokesman Eric Mayne noted that more than 700,000 vehicles coveredby that earlier recall (affecting about 895,000 vehicles globally) have been serviced at this point.
