Need a side job? The 10 best cities for 'gig economy' workers

The gig economy has become typified by piecemeal jobs found on platforms like Uber and Etsy, but that's just part of a larger sea change in the American labor force: 54 million workers considered themselves freelancers last year. Here are the 10 US cities with the most opportunities for them, according to Thumbtack.

4. Madison, Wis.

Gig economy websites like Thumbtack have helped skilled and semi-skilled workers find employment.

In Wisconsin, it isn’t just about the cheese. According to AngelList there are more than 170 startups in Madison that are hiring. GrocerKey, an online grocery-shopping platform, signed a deal in 2015 with local grocery chain Woodman’s Markets, hoping that by staying focused on a mid-sized market like Madison, it may have more durability and staying power than apps like Instacart geared toward a larger, national market.
