100 richest people: Meet the 10 richest Americans

The 100 richest people in the world gained $241 billion in net worth last year, according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index. Americans dominated the list, occupying five of the top 10 spots. This countdown of the top 10 wealthiest Americans features a casino mogul, software tycoons, and a lot of Wal-Mart money.

World Ranking: Tied for 6th

Koch co-owns Koch Industries with his brother Charles and serves as the company’s executive vice president. A Manhattan resident, he is on the board of several charitable organizations in the city, including Lincoln Center, Sloan Kettering, and the American Museum of Natural History, which named its dinosaur wing after him. He was the vice presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party in 1980.
