The only child of doting parents, Roosevelt was heir to family wealth. Educated at a New England prep school and Ivy League universities, FDR worked briefly in law and business before turning to politics. Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor, owned homes in Maine and Georgia, but the famous Roosevelt estate in Hyde Park, N.Y., was owned by Roosevelt’s mother until 1941.
