Hurricane Charley smashed into Florida with Category 4 winds, but within hours it lost strength and its wind speeds dropped from 145 m.p.h. to 85 m.p.h. Charley crossed the state as a Category 1 storm, then raked the East Coast to Rhode Island after claiming a total of 15 lives.
