A prequel to 'The Shining' will reportedly be the subject of a film

A prequel originally written by Stephen King for his novel 'The Shining' will be the basis for a new film.

'The Shining' stars Jack Nicholson.

The 1980 movie “The Shining,” based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, remains a cinema classic, and King released a sequel to his novel titled “Doctor Sleep” this past fall. So now Hollywood is looking backward to before the story of the Torrance family.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. is set to release a film titled “Overlook Hotel” that’s based on a prologue King originally wrote for “Shining.” The text delves into the story of Bob T. Watson, the first owner of the Overlook Hotel where Jack Torrance becomes the caretaker. As noted by Entertainment Weekly, the prequel was later published in Whispers Magazine, this time titled “Before the Play.”

“Never Let Me Go” director Mark Romanek is in talks to direct, according to Variety, while Glen Mazzara, former showrunner for the AMC series “The Walking Dead,” is behind the script.

In addition to its adaptation by director Stanley Kubrick, “Shining” was adapted as a miniseries for ABC in 1997.
