What is the most literate city in America?
According to the newest study by Central Connecticut State University president John Miller, the city of Washington, D.C. is holding onto its crown as the most literate city in the US.
The list looks familiar to anyone who looked at the 2012 data. In addition to Washington taking number 1 both this year and last, Seattle again took the second spot as it did in 2012, while Minneapolis held onto third place.
Atlanta, which was at number eight last year, tied with Pittsburgh, so Miller had the two cities take the fourth and fifth spots.
Boston slipped a spot, from seventh to eighth place, while San Francisco rose to tenth place from its eleventh-place finish in 2012.
Bakersfield, Calif. is still ranked as the least literate city in America, while Corpus Christi, Texas is the second-least and Stockton, Calif. became the third-least.
Miller compiles the data from such information as the number of libraries and bookstores in a city, as well as access to the Internet, newspaper circulation numbers, the highest level of schooling finished by the residents, and other sources.
Miller told USA Today he’s planning on studying the world next year and compiling a list of the most literate countries.
