Universal Pictures has acquired the worldwide rights to the well-reviewed young adult novel “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” by Laini Taylor, it was announced last week.
“My goal is always to write stories that readers will want to climb inside of and live in, and which – I hope – will allow them to just lose themselves in the page,” Taylor said in a statement about the possible movie adaptation. “It is a hugely thrilling prospect to think about Universal and filmmakers translating my world onscreen and giving it a second life in such a grand way. I’m over the moon.”
“Daughter” came out in September and made Amazon’s list of the best books of 2011 as well as Publishers Weekly’s. The story centers on Karou, an art student living in Prague who is forced to do the bidding of a demon but soon begins questioning her world when she meets a mysterious angel.
The book by Taylor, who also wrote the two books that so far make up the Dreamdark series, has been announced to be the first of a trilogy. The next book is scheduled for release next September.
