Star Wars enters a new frontier: e-books

The entire library of Star Wars fiction will become available in e-book format later this summer.

The 106 Star War titles are so popular that none have gone out of print in the 30 years that they’ve been published.

Luke Skywalker is coming to an e-book near you.

Star Wars production company Lucasfilm and Random House joined forces 30 years ago to publish Star Wars titles. Now, they’re entering a new frontier: e-books.

Later this summer, the entire library of Star Wars fiction will be available in e-book format, the company announced on its Star Wars website. Already, some 30 Star Wars novels under the Del Ray imprint are available for download, but beginning June 28 all 106 Star Wars titles will be available as e-books, freeing up valuable shelf space for more important things like, say, glow-in-the-dark light sabers, Darth Vader masks, and Chewbacca squeak toys.

The e-books will have bonus materials, like an updated Star Wars timeline, excerpts from some of the most popular books in the series, and an introduction to the six major Star Wars eras. (The Old Republic, Rise of the Empire, Rebellion, The New Republic, New Jedi Order and Legacy, but you knew that anyway, right?)

Del Ray Books published the first books based on the epically successful Star Wars films more than 30 years ago. Bantam Spectra joined later and there are now tens of millions of Star Wars books in print in the US. They’ve been so enormously popular, none of the titles have gone out of print in the 30 years they’ve been published.

Now that’s a force Lucasfilm and Random House want to be with.
