Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.
The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

I recently read Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, by Malcolm Gladwell, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It includes a collection of stories about how people in various walks of life were able to make very important decisions based on a few seconds or minutes of observation, such as art experts who saw an “ancient” marble sculpture and, without being able to explain how, declared it to be a fake – which was later proved to be.
