Reader recommendation: Ethical Chic

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

I'm reading Ethical Chic: The Inside Story of the Companies We Think We Love by Fran Hawthorne. To quote from page x of the book's introduction: "In this age of consumer activism, pinpoint marketing ... we want the impossible: products ... that will assure ... we are fashionable ... don't pollute, harm animals ... run on alternative energy ... buy from local suppliers ... don't throw their weight around by lobbying.... Hard as it is to be so many things to so many consumers, a handful of companies ... seem to have hit that magic bull's-eye.... [T]hey maintain an image of ... cool, fun ... innovative ... green, politically progressive, and ethical."
