Reader recommendation: Stoner

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

Stoner is a first and unusual novel written by John Williams. The author reveals the mind of Stoner as he moves on in his life. Stoner was born an only child on a dirt-poor farm in Missouri at the end of 19th century. He worked his way on farms as a college student and earned a brilliant career as a professor of literature. But as a grown man he realizes that literature is not enough – his life is missing something. What happens next I will leave to the reader.
