Reader recommendation: The Wrong Guys

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

The Wrong Guys is a must-read for everyone, particularly in this decade when so many innocent people who served long prison terms are exonerated by DNA. It is the true story of the legal battles of four innocent sailors victimized by a corrupt detective and corrupt prosecutors and ignored by judges. One of the co-authors, Richard Leo, a law professor, is an expert on coerced false confessions. This book explains why DNA did not exonerate the sailors and how evidence of their being elsewhere (i..e., on board ship) was ignored. Because they have yet to win back their civil rights, it is a lesson to all: This could happen to you – unless the judicial system is remedied from the ground up.
