Reader recommendation: Ernie K-Doe

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

Ernie K-Doe: The R and B Emperor of New Orleans by Ben Sandmel is a most unusual book, generous with photographs of the “emperor” in his fantastic costumes,  threaded with quotes from colleagues, and especially generous with the affection with which the author, a New Orleans resident, so clearly regards his subject. Ernie K-Doe was flamboyant, narcissistic, alcoholic,  generous, and intoxicated with his own superlative ability. Don’t care about  R and B? Sandmel’s writing makes this book a delight, no matter what your interests.
