7. 'Grant' by Ron Chernow

"Grant" by Ron Chernow, Penguin Press, 1104 pp.

In his latest thorough biography, Ron Chernow turns his eye to Ulysses S. Grant: the Union general of the Civil War, a failed businessman, and a president. Mr. Chernow also wrote “Hamilton” (2004) which inspired Lin Manuel Miranda’s hit musical. "Just as he did with George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, Chernow brings Ulysses S. Grant to life," Terry Hartle writes for the Monitor. He adds that "[Chernow's] moving account of Lee’s surrender at Appomattox is worth the price of the book by itself."
