Debut author Essbaum's novel is the story of Anna Benz, an American married to Swiss banker Bruno, who tries to reinvigorate herself with everything from foreign language classes to affairs. Nelson notes that Essbaum is also a poet. "Even the most mundane [descriptions] are very poetic and precise," she says.
