10 best books of January: the Monitor's picks

What the Monitor's book critics liked best this month.

2. "Leaving Before the Rains Come," by Alexandra Fuller

Fans of Alexandra Fuller’s earlier memoirs (“Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight” and “Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness”) about her life and travels in the former Rhodesia, as well as Zaire, Malawi, and Mozambique, will not want to miss this sometimes disturbing but always compelling third volume, which tells how and why she left Africa for the United States.
